How to make an Egyptian coffin

10 Oct 2018

Melanie Pitkin

Our latest book, featuring the work of the Fitzwilliam Museum’s Egyptian coffins project, has just been published.

Using the results from detailed analyses of the wooden structure of the inner coffin of Nespawershefyt and the composition of its decorative layers, the book reveals the skill of the Egyptian craftsmen involved in creating this amazing coffin. Replication experiments by Geoff Killen and Elsbeth Geldhof add immeasurably to our understanding of the processes involved.

The book costs just £7.50 (excluding postage) and can be ordered online here. An Arabic version is also available.
